What is a “Debt Schedule?”
A “Debt Schedule” is a term often used in many types of financial modeling including three statement models, merger and acquisition (M&A) models, and leveraged buyout (LBO) models. It outlines the principal debt amount and interest payments that are due each year after the debt has been borrowed. In an LBO transaction, given the complexity where multiple debt instruments come into play, the debt schedule serves a critical role. Its main objective is to ensure that all repayment obligations associated with these debt instruments are met. This way, it provides a clear picture of the company’s debt obligations, helping to maintain financial stability post-transaction.

Key Components of a Debt Schedule Template
Beginning Balance: This is the initial amount of debt a company has at the onset of a specific accounting period.
Repayments: These are the payments made by the company that reduce the debt balance during the accounting period.
Drawdown: These represent any new debt taken on by the company, which increases the debt balance during the accounting period.
Interest Expense: This is the cost associated with the company’s debt for the accounting period.
Ending Balance: This is the final amount of debt a company has at the end of the accounting period. It’s calculated by adding the drawdowns to the opening balance and then subtracting the repayments. This closing balance then becomes the opening balance for the next accounting period.
